Poetry Workshops in Prisons
In 1974 the Poetry Center’s oldest community program, the Arizona State Prison Creative Writing Workshops, was founded by Emeritus University of Arizona Professor and former Poetry Center director Richard Shelton. The program brings poets and teachers to the state’s prisons, providing inmates an opportunity to express themselves creatively through writing. Supported since 1991 by a grant from the Lannan Foundation, this program has generated numerous books of poetry and prose, including the anthology
Do Not Go Gentle, and the literary journal
Walking Rain Review.
