Marilyn NelsonA Renowned Writer's Visit Provides Many Opportunities
Poet and young adult author Marilyn Nelson
Marilyn Nelson is going to be busy in Tucson later this month. She is reading and teaching at the Pima Writer's conference on May 29 and May 30, and she'll be delivering a matinee aimed at middle and high school students at the Poetry Center at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, an event that is open to the public. Nelson took a few moments to answer some questions about her writing process asked by UA student Christina Delehanty.

poetry in schools At The Intersection of Teaching and Writing
A successful program's first year concludes
“At the Intersection of Teaching and Writing: Creative Writing in K-5 Classrooms” is a new year-long program in which M.F.A. students develop skills and experience as Teaching Artists. Recent graduates of the program describe some of their favorite writing activities and present the work of their elementary school students. Please join us on May 12 at 7 p.m. at the Poetry Center for a reading which will include all five participating elementary schools.

Ai (Florence Anthony)A Tucson Native's Works on Exhibit
Poet Ai is featured in the library's latest exhibit beginning May 25
Ai (Florence Anthony) is an award-winning poet who received her MFA from the University of California, grew up in Tucson, and has taught in various institutions including, presently, at Oklahoma State University. Her work is passionate and colorful, and includes a score of invented personae of compelling interest.

Poet James Allen Hall is this year's Summer Resident
The winner of this year’s Fieries and the Snuffies Residency for Emerging Writers is James Allen Hall whose entry was selected by our judge Richard Siken. James Allen Hall will be reading from his work at the Poetry Center on June 18 at 8 p.m.

ArtWorksAn Exhibition in the Ingall’s Gallery of the Poetry Center
New works by ArtWorks participants
The group of artists represented in this exhibition work in a community called ArtWorks, a day program and art studio that offers space, materials and support to developmentally disabled adults. The program offers an open and accepting environment that encourages working in the arts to give structure and validity to the everyday lives of the participants. These works will be on exhibition at the Poetry Center from May 11-June 15.
