Poetry Joeys is a Saturday morning reading and activity group for children taught by experienced poets, writers, and teaching artists who base their lessons on our curriculum VERSE!: Poetry for Young Children. Poetry Joeys takes place in the Children’s Corner of the Poetry Center.

Patricia Escárcega writes fiction and poetry. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona creative writing program.


Oyes, Oyes! Listen, Listen!
A love poem is always fun to write with poet and teacher Rita Magdaleno.

Saturday, February 21, 10:00 a.m.

Rita Maria Magdaleno works as a poet in the schools for Arizona Commission on the Arts. Magdaleno’s publications include Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, & My Mother (University of Arizona Press 2003), and My New Backyard Garden, a bilingual children’s book (2006).


New Format! Poetry Joeys March 28, 10 to 11 a.m.
Same Joey's time, same Joey's place, Poetry Joeys now hosts two different sessions at the same time to accommodate different age groups. Feel free to self-select the session you and your child attend. All ages are welcome in both places.

For 4-6 year olds:
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.

(Knees and toes!) Translate your movements into poems with writer/dancer/choreographer Kimi Eisele.

Kimi Eisele is a writer, dancer/choreographer, and educator. She is the Special Projects Director for NEW ARTiculations, where she recently directed We Are What We Eat in collaboration with the Community Food Bank and The Invisible City, an experimental arts lab in public spaces of downtown Tucson in collaboration with Kore Press.

For 7-10 year olds
Wheels, Wings, and Words.

Transform and transport yourself! Go any and everywhere in the universe and beyond! Create a poem that documents your journey with Matthew John Conley!

Matthew John Conley is the Biggest Kid you will ever see. This year he is working with 1st and 2nd graders from Hollinger Elementary to write the world's first Children's Epic Poem.

Get ready to dance the morning away with folks from the UA Museum of Art.

Saturday, April 25, 10:00 a.m.

Work with visual arts educators from the UA Museum of Art to design and participate in a performance piece that incorporates poetic language, movement, color, shape, and form.
