2009 Internship Opportunities

One intern will be hired to fill each of the following departments:

  • Education
  • Marketing
  • Event Planning
  • Library
In addition to daily duties & regularly assigned projects, each intern is required to do one of the following per semester: present shop talk, book club, write newsletter feature, help curate library exhibit, introduce a writer at a reading, or otherwise provide content for programming.  

Educational programs.
Provide support, planning, and development around the Poetry Center’s education programs which include, but are not limited to: Poetry Joeys, fieldtrip groups, the Corrido Contest, Poetry Out Loud, Stanza Bonanza.  

Marketing.
Assist in all web-based and print outreach efforts; maintain mailing database, write & maintain web content, coordinate annual appeal and other targeted mailings; write press releases; research and develop new strategies for public outreach; design and print publicity materials.  

Event Planning.
Coordinate details surrounding the Reading Series, symposium, and help to staff events. Promote, administer, and coordinate local, regional, and national poetry contests, and the classes and workshops program.  

Library.
Support library staff in managing a special collection library of contemporary poetry, managing a rare book room and an electronic database, assessing the collection, and/or creating exhibitions of material from the Poetry Center archives.

All internship positions have been filled for the Fall 2009 semester. Please check back for openings in November.
Internship Program at UA Poetry Center
Interns make a significant contribution to Poetry Center literary programs, education initiatives, and library projects while supporting their own professional development. We provide opportunities in the areas of arts administration, arts education, arts marketing, library science. We hope to attract individuals who are motivated, thoughtful, creative, and detail-oriented. Interns at the Poetry Center should have an interest in contemporary poetry, arts administration, and/or special collections library work.

General Information

Graduate students in the English Department are eligible to apply. At least a one semester commitment is required with a preference given to those applicants who are interested in working a whole year. Students will work 9 hours a week in their first semester and receive 3 hours of credit. In the second semester, students will work 15 hours per week and earn a stipend of $2,500.  

Students may not carry a .5 teaching load concurrent with a Poetry Center internship.  

Interns must be available to meet Mondays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
