The Collection
Children’s Books
The Children’s Collection at the Poetry Center includes over 350 volumes of poetry for children. Included in the collection are books by prolific and well known children’s book writers such as Jack Prelutsky, Shel Silverstein and Douglas Florian, as well as children’s books by celebrated adult literature writers such as X. J. Kennedy, Ted Hughes, T.S. Eliot and John Betjeman. Anthologies of poems for children form another important part of the collection. These include The Oxford Treasury of Children’s Poems, and numerous collections, such as those edited by poet Naomi Shihab Nye, that seek to highlight poems from diverse cultures. There is also an assortment of curricular and pedagogical materials, including audio materials, for use in teaching poetry to children, including the Poetry Center’s own publication, VERSE! Poetry for Young Children.
