The University of Arizona Poetry Center’s special collection library is a great place for a field trip and can serve as a hands-on supplement to your school’s poetry unit. We’ve developed a scavenger hunt to teach students how to access and engage with a collection that might seem intimidating at first. Students receive a 10-15 minute tour of the collection that provides information for the scavenger hunt. The hunt requires students to access information in a variety of ways, from spine-reading to scanning, and also highlights a variety of formats for poetry including periodicals, anthologies, children’s books and broadsides. It is up to teachers whether to treat the scavenger hunt as an assignment, and the activity works well for pairs, small groups or as an individual activity. The scavenger hunt usually takes between 30 and 50 minutes. With enough prior notice, our librarian or library assistant can help you come up with a different lesson plan to accommodate your students’ needs and teachers are certainly welcome to develop and lead their own lesson plan using poetry center staff members to answer questions as needed. Please give us at least two weeks notice when planning your field trip.
For the 2009-2010 academic year, field trips and tours for grades K-12 are available on Fridays, 9 am to 2 pm.
